Graduate Faculty Membership

 

Graduate Faculty Nomination Requirements

The Graduate Faculty nomination requirements encompass policies, which allow for a broad level of inclusion of members while insuring that the graduate faculty are fully qualified to direct graduate training in the MS, PhD and MD/PhD degree programs at LSUHSC-NO.


Introduction

The graduate faculty at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans shall consist of those members of the teaching and research faculties who have been so designated by the Chancellor acting on appropriate nominations. Such designations provide for classification as a Full Member, Associate Member, Affiliate Member or Emeritus Member, according to qualifications and experience. All members of the Graduate Faculty agree to adhere to the principles and guidelines of the Compact Between Biomedical Graduate Students and Their Research Advisors and the Appropriate Treatment of Research Trainees.


Full Membership 

Privileges and Responsibilities

Full members of the Graduate Faculty can serve as voting members of the Graduate Advisory Council (GAC), engage in all graduate education activities, nominate faculty for membership to the graduate faculty, direct thesis or dissertation research, and chair thesis or dissertation committees. (Note: All thesis or dissertation committees must have a majority of full members of the graduate faculty.)

Appointment as a full member of the Graduate Faculty is for an indefinite term but is subject to review.

Qualifications for Appointment

  • Rank of assistant professor or above in a department or program offering a graduate degree in the School of Graduate Studies
  • Highest degree appropriate to their field of study.
  • Experience in graduate student education including the direction of graduate research, theses and/or dissertations (as major advisor or member of a committee), developing and teaching graduate level courses or participation in School of Graduate Studies activities such as mentoring, recruiting and outreach.
  • Current and sustained scholarly activities.


Associate Membership

Privileges and Responsibilities

Associate members of the Graduate Faculty may engage in all graduate education activities with the exception of nominating faculty for membership of the graduate faculty. Associate members may direct research and/or chair thesis or dissertation committees as long as a majority of the committee are full members of the graduate faculty and they have permission from the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

Appointment as an associate member of the Graduate Faculty is for a maximum term of three years and should be upgraded to full membership by the end of that term. They may apply to be an affiliate member if they do not upgrade to full membership.

Qualifications for Appointment

  • Rank of assistant professor or above in a department or program offering a graduate degree in the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Highest degree appropriate to their field of study or unquestionable evidence of comparable achievement in their field.
  • A record of current scholarly activity.
  • Active involvement in research, teaching or other activities relevant to the Graduate School.


Affilliate Membership

Privileges and Responsibilities

Affiliate members of the Graduate Faculty cannot serve as members of the GAC but may serve as members of thesis or dissertation committees. They may not chair these committees. This membership is for those faculty primarily involved in clinical practice and/or research.

Appointment as an affiliate member of the Graduate Faculty is for an initial term of five years. After five years, an affiliate member will need to renew their membership or be removed as a Graduate Faculty member.

Qualifications for Appointment

  • Rank of assistant professor or above.
  • Highest degree appropriate to their field of study or unquestionable evidence of comparable achievement in their field.
  • Current or planned activities in graduate teaching or research mentorship


Emeritus Membership 

Privileges and Responsibilities

Emeritus members of the Graduate Faculty are faculty who have retired and have been approved for emeritus status per the regulations in PM-69. They may continue to serve on thesis and dissertation committees as chairs or members.

Appointment as an emeritus member of the Graduate Faculty is for an indefinite term but is subject to review and contingent upon maintaining emeritus status.

Qualifications for Appointment

  • Appointment as a Full member of the Graduate Faculty in good standing prior to retirement.
