Name: Kaylin Beiter

Year in Program: 7 (4th year medical student)

Hometown: Lima, NY

Education: Undergraduate: Rochester Institute of Technology. PhD: LSUHSC School of Public Health, Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences

 Past Research Experience:

Prior to my time at LSU, I was mentored by Dr. Bolaji Thomas throughout my time as an undergraduate student at RIT. I owe my interest in public health to my work with him! I also completed a summer research program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, with Dr. Elizabeth Lowenthal. After graduation, I worked with Dr. Soulemane Mboup's group studying HIV in Senegal as a Fulbright research fellow.

Since joining the MD-PhD program, I have also worked with Dr. Jason Mussell on ethical guidelines for the use of archival fetal tissues in medical education. During my PhD I collaborated with the Trauma Recovery Clinic at UMC Hospital, a combined clinical and research team led by Dr. Erich Conrad that focuses on treatment of PTSD following physically-traumatic injuries. I also worked closely with Dr. Stephen Phillippi at the Louisiana Center for Evidence to Practice to improve access to evidence-based behavioral health practices for Medicaid-insured youths and families. My dissertation examined changes in community violence health disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 Current Research Interest:

Now as a senior medical student I have found my passion in Dermatology. I have been working to find my niche within the field, building upon my research expertise in behavioral and community health. I am currently working on a study of place-based health disparities in Hidradenitis suppurativa in New Orleans patients with the LSU Department, and have also been working on a pediatric Dermatology health disparities project in collaboration with the University of Chicago. It has been exciting and rewarding!

 Current Medical Interest: Dermatology.

Career Goal: To use my MD-PhD training to the fullest, working as a physician scientist within the field of Dermatology. I aspire towards continued work with and service to historically-excluded communities, while providing mentorship to undergraduates, medical students, and anyone else that I can help along the way.

What makes you unique? While at LSU I've trained and ran two full Marathons (including Boston) and one half Marathon.

What makes you common? I want my work to help address the health disparities present in my community.
