Faculty Nomination Requirements
The Graduate Faculty nomination requirements encompass policies, which allow for a broad level of inclusion of members while insuring
that the graduate faculty are fully qualified to direct graduate
training in the MS, PhD and MD/PhD degree programs at LSUHSC-NO.
Introduction
The graduate faculty at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
in New Orleans shall consist of those members of the teaching and research faculties who have been so designated by the Chancellor acting on appropriate nominations. Such designations provide for classification as a Full Member, Associate Member, or Affiliate Member, according to qualifications and experience.

Membership (indefinite term, subject to review)
Qualifications for Appointment

Rank of
assistant professor or above in a department or program offering
a graduate degree in the School of Graduate Studies
- Highest degree appropriate to the health science field.

Experience in participation in the direction of graduate research, theses and/or dissertations (as major advisor or member of a committee) or in developing and teaching graduate credit courses in the health sciences.

Current and sustained scholarly activities, as indicated by publications in peer reviewed biomedical journals in the field.
Privileges and
Responsibilities
Full members serve as voting members of the Advisory Council, engage in all graduate education activities, nominate faculty for membership to the graduate faculty, direct thesis or dissertation research and chair thesis or dissertation committees.
Associate Member (five year term initial appointment, renewed every five years)

Appointment

Rank of
assistant professor or above in a department or program offering
a graduate degree in the School of Graduate Studies.

Highest degree appropriate to the health science field or unquestionable evidence of comparable achievement in the field.
- Teaching activity in graduate program in the health sciences.

Current and sustained scholarly activities, as indicated by publications in recognized peer-reviewed biomedical journals in the field.
Privileges and
Responsibilities
Associate members may engage in all graduate education activities with the exception of serving as voting members of the Advisory Council, unilaterally directing student research or unilaterally chairing a thesis or dissertation committee. Associate members may direct research or chair a thesis or dissertation committee if the student's committee has a majority of full
members of the graduate faculty.
AFFILIATE MEMBER (two-year term, renewable)

Current and sustained scholarly activities and substantive contribution to their field.
Privileges and
Responsibilities
Affiliate members may direct
graduate courses and serve as members of thesis, dissertation,
and examination committees, but may not normally chair one of
these committees or determine policies of the graduate faculty.
Affiliate members who have a continuing and particularly close
association with a graduate instructional program may, at the special
request of the Program, and upon recommendation of the Advisory Council
and approval by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, be given
permission to chair committees if the committee has a majority of full
members.
